Why Your Law Firm Isn't Showing Up in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews — And the 90-Day Fix

Your rankings held. Your traffic didn't. AI Overviews now answer the legal questions your clients used to click on — and if your firm isn't cited, you're invisible. Here's how to fix it in 90 days.

Your law firm ranks on page one. Traffic is down anyway.

That's not a coincidence. That's the new reality of AI search.

Google AI Overviews rolled out to all U.S. users in May 2024. ChatGPT Search and Perplexity now pull live web content to answer legal questions directly. When AI gives the answer, users don't need to click. According to Clio's GEO analysis, 60% of users who receive an AI-generated answer to a legal question never click through to a website.

If your firm isn't the one being cited, you've lost the client before they ever landed on your site.

Here's why it's happening — and the exact 90-day sequence to fix it.

The Search Shift Law Firms Missed

AI Overviews now trigger in 68% of legal-related queries in the United States, according to BrightEdge's 2025 AI search analysis.

When those overviews appear, click-through rates fall — hard. Research from eMarketer found that AI Overviews decrease CTRs by 34.5% for top-ranking pages. A separate analysis of Google's own antitrust documents by ALM Corp put the number as high as 58%.

This matters for law firms specifically because legal content is classified as YMYL — "Your Money or Your Life" in Google's quality evaluator framework. AI engines apply the highest scrutiny to YMYL content. They cite sources they trust. Most small firm websites don't clear that bar — not because the lawyers aren't excellent, but because the sites weren't built for how AI retrieves information.

The window to establish early authority is open. It won't stay that way.

The 4 Reasons Your Firm Isn't Being Cited

1. Your Content Isn't Structured for Machine Consumption

AI engines don't read like humans. They scan for direct answers, clear headers, and defined terms. Long paragraphs that bury the answer get skipped.

If your practice area pages open with "At [Firm Name], we believe in fighting for our clients..." — that's marketing copy, not an answer. AI systems skip it.

Quick fix: Reformat your top pages. Open each section with a one-sentence direct answer. Add Q&A blocks. Use headers that are full questions.

2. You're Missing E-E-A-T Signals

Google's quality evaluators look for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. So do AI engines.

Specific signals that move the needle: attorney bios that list bar admissions, published case results, law review or media citations, and links to primary legal sources — statutes, court decisions — embedded in your content.

A blog post written in a firm's generic brand voice with no named author doesn't trigger these signals. A post written by "Jane Torres, Board Certified Family Law Attorney, licensed in Texas since 2014" does.

3. Your Local Signals Are Inconsistent

AI Overviews for local legal queries pull Google Business Profile data and cross-reference local directory citations. If your firm name, address, or phone number varies across directories — a common problem after a move or rebrand — that inconsistency reads as a trust signal. A negative one.

Check Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Yelp, and Apple Maps. They all need to match exactly.

4. You're Targeting Keywords, Not Questions

AI search matches intent, not keywords. "Personal injury lawyer Chicago" is a keyword. "What should I do after a car accident in Chicago if the other driver was at fault?" is a question.

AI engines are built to answer questions. If your content isn't written in question-and-answer format, it's competing in a language AI doesn't speak.

What GEO Actually Means (and Why SEO Alone Falls Short)

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your digital presence so that AI-powered answer engines — Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot — cite and recommend your firm when users ask questions in your practice area.

The distinction from SEO is simple but important: SEO gets you on a list. GEO gets you quoted as the answer.

Both matter. GEO without an SEO foundation doesn't work. But SEO alone is no longer enough when a growing majority of users with a legal question accept the AI's answer without clicking anywhere.

Content signals that reliably get law firms cited in AI answers:

  • A direct, jargon-free answer in the first 100 words of each content section
  • FAQ sections at the end of practice area pages
  • Citations to primary legal sources embedded in the body text
  • Named attorney authors with verifiable credentials
  • FAQPage schema on high-intent pages

The 90-Day Action Plan

This is sequenced deliberately. Don't skip to Month 2 without Month 1's foundation.

Month 1: Audit and Fix the Basics (Weeks 1–4)

Week 1 — GEO audit. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google. Enter the specific legal questions your clients ask most often. Are you cited? Document every gap. This becomes your baseline.

Week 2 — NAP consistency. Your Name, Address, and Phone number must match exactly across Google Business Profile, Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Yelp, and Apple Maps. This is unglamorous work. Do it anyway — it's a foundational trust signal.

Week 3 — Author bios. Add full E-E-A-T bios to every practice area page and blog post: bar admission date, jurisdiction, certifications. Link each attorney's bio to their state bar profile page.

Week 4 — Schema markup. Implement LegalService and LocalBusiness schema on your homepage and core practice area pages. Verify with Google's Rich Results Test.

Month 2: Content Overhaul (Weeks 5–8)

Weeks 5–6 — Reformat top pages. Take your 10 highest-traffic pages and restructure them: open sections with direct answers, add Q&A blocks, cite statutes or case law where relevant. Don't rewrite from scratch — reformat what exists.

Week 7 — FAQPage schema. Build and implement FAQPage schema on your five highest-intent practice area pages. These are the pages that should be cited when someone asks an AI a specific legal question.

Week 8 — Publish two question-driven posts. Write two new articles structured entirely as Q&A, targeting the specific questions AI engines are already answering in your practice area and geography.

Month 3: Authority and Measurement (Weeks 9–12)

Weeks 9–10 — Citation building. Secure 3–5 new mentions from legal directories, local press, bar publications, or community organizations. Each mention is a signal to AI that you're a credible authority — not just a website.

Week 11 — Google Business Profile audit. Complete every field: services, Q&A section, recent posts. Flag anything inconsistent with your other directory listings.

Week 12 — Benchmark. Re-run the 20 queries you tested in Week 1. How often is your firm cited now? That delta is your 90-day proof of concept — and the foundation for your next quarter's strategy.

The Metric That Actually Matters Now

Stop tracking rankings alone. Track AI citation rate — how often your firm appears when relevant queries are entered into ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google.

Test it weekly. Log it in a spreadsheet. It'll lag for the first 4–6 weeks while content changes propagate. Then it will move.

Note: organic impressions in Google Search Console may rise even as clicks fall. That's not failure — that's AI Overview exposure without the click. The solution isn't to stop optimizing. It's to become the firm that gets cited inside the Overview, turning impressions back into brand recognition and eventual direct traffic.

The Bottom Line

AI search is not coming. It arrived in 2024 — and it is already reshaping how your next client finds a lawyer.

The firms that invest in GEO now will hold an authority position that compounds over the next 12–24 months. The ones that wait will spend considerably more to close a widening gap.

The 90-day plan above isn't complicated. It's sequenced, specific, and based on how AI engines actually retrieve and cite content. The only question is whether your firm starts this week or next quarter.
