Why Your Law Firm Isn't Showing Up in AI Overviews (And the GEO Fixes That Actually Work)

You're ranking on page one. A potential client just asked Google a legal question — and an AI answer box appeared, citing three competitors. Here's how to get cited instead.

You're ranking on page one. Your agency sends monthly reports showing keyword gains.

But a potential client just typed "do I need a DUI attorney" into Google — and an AI-generated answer box appeared above every organic result, citing three law firms.

Yours wasn't one of them.

That's the AI Overviews problem. And it's already costing law firms real traffic.

The Search Shift Law Firms Can't Afford to Ignore

Google launched AI Overviews to all US users in May 2024. Since then, they've expanded steadily into legal queries — exactly the high-intent searches law firms depend on.

"Do I need a personal injury lawyer?" "How long does a wrongful termination case take?" "What happens at an arraignment?" These are all triggering AI-generated answers now.

Here's what makes this dangerous: the firm cited in the AI answer isn't always the one ranked #1 organically. BrightEdge's Generative AI Research found that pages cited in AI Overviews see stronger engagement, while pages that rank well but go uncited face click-through compression — even at positions 1 through 3.

You can win the SEO game and still lose the client.

Why AI Skips Most Law Firm Sites

Google classifies legal content as YMYL — Your Money or Your Life. The trust bar is higher than for a lifestyle blog. Google's E-E-A-T guidelines require demonstrated Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness for content that could affect someone's finances, health, or legal standing.

Most law firm websites fail this test in predictable ways.

No attorney byline. Content published under a generic "Staff" or "Admin" author builds no trust signals. Every substantive legal page needs a named attorney with bar credentials attached.

No date stamps. Undated legal content signals staleness. AI crawlers notice.

Disclaimer-first writing. The instinct to open every paragraph with "This is not legal advice" kills citation chances. AI needs a direct, extractable answer in the first 40–60 words of a section. Front-load a disclaimer and AI moves on to the next result.

Missing schema markup. Most law firm sites lack LegalService, Attorney, or FAQPage schema. Without it, AI systems guess at what the firm does, who the attorneys are, and what questions the page answers. Schema is the machine-readable name tag your site is missing.

GEO 101: What's Different from Traditional SEO

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) means optimizing for AI citation — not just search ranking. The two overlap more than people realize, but they aren't the same game.

What still matters: E-E-A-T signals, mobile performance, and Core Web Vitals. Google's thresholds are LCP under 2.5 seconds, CLS under 0.1, and INP under 200 milliseconds — all remain relevant for AI-surfaced content.

What changes: keyword density matters far less. Answer precision, structured markup, and sourcing matter more.

Firms that consistently get cited in AI Overviews share three traits:

  1. Their content answers the question in the first sentence — no preamble, no throat-clearing.
  2. Their pages carry schema that tells AI exactly what's covered.
  3. A named, credentialed attorney authored the content and is verifiable online.

That's not a secret formula. It's structure. And most law firm sites don't have it.

5 GEO Fixes to Start This Week

1. Rewrite your opening paragraphs. Pull your top three practice area pages. If the first paragraph doesn't directly answer the primary client question in 40–60 words, rewrite it now. Move disclaimers to the footer. The answer goes first.

2. Add FAQPage schema to every practice area page. Build structured FAQ blocks with schema that mirrors your H3 headers exactly. If your H3 reads "How long does a car accident case take to settle?" — the schema entry should match that question word-for-word. AI extracts these directly.

3. Put a credentialed attorney byline on every legal content page. Not a headshot in the sidebar — a proper author block with the attorney's name, bar admission state, and year admitted. Linking to a full bio page adds more authority signal.

4. Implement LegalService and Attorney schema sitewide. At minimum: areaServed, knowsAbout, and hasOfferCatalog for the firm; barMembership for each attorney. Validate everything in Google's Rich Results Test before publishing.

5. Pull your question-format queries from Google Search Console. Filter for queries starting with "do I need," "how long does," or "what happens if" where you rank positions 1–10 but CTR is unusually low. That pattern often means an AI Overview is absorbing the clicks. Those pages are your GEO priority list.

The Law Firm AI Visibility Checklist

Run through these before anything else.

Technical

  • LegalService and Attorney schema present and validated via Rich Results Test
  • Core Web Vitals passing: LCP under 2.5s, CLS under 0.1, INP under 200ms
  • Site renders fully on mobile without clipping
  • Practice area pages internally linked from homepage and nav

Content

  • Every practice area page has a named, credentialed attorney byline
  • Opening paragraph answers the primary query directly — no disclaimer lead
  • At least one FAQ block per practice area page with FAQPage schema
  • All statistics and legal claims cite a primary source (statute, court ruling, or bar association)
  • Content reviewed within the last 12 months with a visible date stamp

Entity

  • Google Business Profile primary category is your specific practice area — not generic "Lawyer"
  • NAP (Name, Address, Phone) is identical across your site footer, GBP, Avvo, Martindale, and Justia
  • Firm is claimed and data is consistent across all major legal directories

What to Do Before Friday

The firms moving first on AI Overviews aren't rebuilding their sites. They're making targeted fixes that directly change how AI reads and cites their content.

Pick one practice area. Rewrite the opening paragraph. Add FAQPage schema. Put a credentialed attorney byline on it. Validate the schema. That's a morning's work.

Then open Search Console, filter for question-format queries with low CTR, and build your priority list from there.

Repeat. That's GEO for law firms.

If you want help getting your local SEO foundation right at the same time, the technical layer and the content layer compound each other — fix both and the results accelerate.
